"American Jews in America's Game" is an offering of the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS), America's oldest ethnic history organization. This 142-player commemorative set has been produced for AJHS by Jewish Major Leaguers, Inc. (JML), and Fleer Trading Cards. This boxed set also contains career leader and "check-list" cards, as well as an essay on the making of the set, and the American Jewish baseball experience.

JML located the player photos, wrote the text of the cards, and developed the basic design of the set. Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association have generously agreed to license the set on a non-commercial basis, while Fleer has matched that generosity by managing production and packaging on a cost-only basis.

This is a limited edition of 15,000 sets.

The sets are currently available only from AJHS, which is selling them only to existing and new members. You can buy them by joining AJHS through the gift-shop page of their web-site: www.ajhs-store.com

Pre-publication reports on this project in the Jewish press generated great interest and excitement in this offering. We have heard from at least 3 generations of fans and collectors and relatives of players who are eager to obtain sets, who describe themselves as "touched" by this project, and who are willing to help get the word out.

We were also encouraged by the Hall of Fame's encouragement of this project, and by the review of the HOF's Director of Research, Tim Wiles, who has described the set as "...a significant, highly readable, and well-researched contribution to the documentary record of both baseball, and the participation of Jews in the game."

Additional facts about the set:

  • It is based on the Jewish Sports Review list of players, with a few additions and one subtraction.

  • Of the 142 players, 33 never appeared in a card set, and another nine appeared only as minor-leaguers.

  • Most of the photographs were supplied by George Brace of Chicago, legendary photographer who recently passed away at age 89. Mr. Brace had photos of about 40 players whose photos did not exist in the great archives of either the Hall of Fame or The Sporting News.

  • We found photos of another six players by contacting families and University archivists.
